1G1-3 One micron-thick toluidine blue stained sections of the plastic embedded muscle show a prominence of small dark staining, oblong to round structures within the muscle fibers. Some of these structures show a tendency for subsarcolemmal grouping; however, others are scattered throughout the muscle fibers. These are subsequently identified as mitochondria, however they are larger than those typically seen in normal muscle. In addition, there are lucent vacuoles in some of the fibers, consistent with fat globules. (Plastic sections).
