There are significant differences, even in adjacent mitochondria (electron micrograph) ---- Cytochrome oxidase is normal. SDH shows no definite fibers with increased staining in regions of the sample without artifact. Complex III activity is moderately reduced. Complex I and II activities are mildly reduced. Other mitochondrial oxidative enzyme activity levels are normal. High citrate synthase levels suggest mitochondrial proliferation. Values have been corrected for citrate synthase level. Complexes I-V are present in normal amount by Western blot.
