Washington University Experience | MUSCLE | Myopathies with Mitochondrial Pathology | 3B10 Case 3 EM005 - Copy
These mitochondria are not as dark and do not contain significant inclusions but are increased in number and shape. If all fibers had this appearance I would have called this “mitochondriopathy” rather than mitochondrial myopathy. (electron micrograph) ---- Not shown (from the Neuromuscular report): There are numerous ragged red fibers on Gomori trichrome. NADH highlights frequent fibers with darkly stained internal architecture. A Sudan stain shows many fibers with increased reactivity. Cytochrome oxidase shows numerous fibers with reduced, but generally not absent, staining. SDH highlights numerous fibers with increased staining reflecting mitochondrial proliferation. ----Comment: We called this mitochondrial myopathy which was manifest by numerous ragged red fibers, and fibers that stain strongly for SDH. Mitochondrial proliferation is more prominent than loss of cytochrome oxidase.
