Higher magnification of image #8A5C. (electron micrographs) ---- Not shown: The trichrome stain shows many ragged-red fibers. NADH confirms abnormal internal architecture with some condensed membrane staining within the fibers and around their margins. The cytochrome oxidase stain shows pale staining fibers, but no negatively staining fibers. SDH demonstrates strong labeling of many ragged red fibers. ---- Comment: The diagnosis in this case was mitochondrial myopathy with abundant ragged red fibers, relatively normal cytochrome oxidase staining and numerous significantly abnormal mitochondria.
