5E1A-D Ultrastructural examination demonstrates prominent pathologic alterations of muscle fibers. Scattered atrophic fibers are present. In parallel with actin filaments, there are discrete regions of osmiophilic striated sarcoplasmic inclusions most consistent with nemaline rods which appear filamentous and of various sizes. Multiple magnifications of this muscle fiber show disorganization of the individual sarcomeres and numerous nemaline rods. (electron micrographs)
