This is a second NMJ in the same patient. Notice that the nerve terminal occupies a larger expanse and that the junctional folds appear shallower. (electron micrographs) ---- Not shown: Ultrastructural investigation by electron microscopy demonstrated focally increased numbers of mitochondria in subsarcolemma including some large forms and abnormal shapes. There are rare fat droplets associated with mitochondria. Presence of these focal findings is suggestive, but not diagnostic, of mild mitochondriopathy.
