4I1,2 The possibility that this process may represent a vasculitis resulted in the use of smooth muscle actin immunohistochemistry to examine the blood vessels. The interpretation was that vessels appeared damaged by reactive cells moving through vessel walls and not by primary angiitis. Vasculitis is also less favored by the demyelinative rather than necrotic appearance of the NF immunolabeled axon population.
