Case 18 History ---- The patient was a 34 year old female with rapidly progressive multiple sclerosis diagnosed two years ago. She had no response to multiple treatments with steroids. At the time of admission she was paraplegic, with bilateral upper extremity weakness, diminished visual acuity, and ocular ataxia. She was admitted for the last time on 6/20/92 for intentional (suicidal) starvation, multiple decubitus ulcers, urinary and fecal incontinence and depression. Her hospital course was complicated by pneumonia, sepsis and ARDS, and she expired.
