Case 12 History ---- The patient is a 66-year-old woman with multiple sclerosis. The patient was diagnosed at age 34 after an episode of optic neuritis the previous year. She was treated with Avonex for some time. Her muscular strength worsened over the following years and she lost the use of her legs in 2007. Subsequently, she had gradual loss of motor function in her upper extremities as well as cognitive problems. Her clinical course included multiple treatments with steroid medications. Her most recent imaging was an MRI performed in 2009 of the brain and spinal cord which showed findings consistent with demyelinating disease. At the time of her expiration, the patient was living at home. The autopsy is performed due to the patient's enrollment in a multiple sclerosis study.
