Often patients dying with RRMS at the end of a long course have many remote inactive plaques; however, patients with secondary progressive MS or at the edges of chronic active plaques may have areas of considerable ongoing activity. This section shows an active plaque margin with inflammation and collections of macrophages in the parenchyma and perivascular Virchow-Robin space (LFB-PAS).
