Case 9 History ---- The patient was a 70 year old man with a history of multiple sclerosis with recurrent episodes of aspiration pneumonia, for which a G-tube was placed. His past medical history also included paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, thyroid enlargement status post thyroidectomy, recurrent urinary tract infections and urinary retention requiring long-term Foley catheterization, depression, dementia, a cerebrovascular accident and trigeminal neuralgia. The patient resided at an extended care facility. He was admitted to an outside hospital for shortness of breath and was diagnosed with aspiration pneumonia. The patient's family was consulted and the decision was made to put the patient on hospice care. She passed away on mid-November 2008 at an outside hospital. Due to the patient's history of neurological disease, a limited autopsy was requested to assess the brain and spinal cord.
