This section of the left occipital lobe shows patchy loss of color involving the central white matter with relative sparing of the cortex. There is a degree of U-fiber sparing. The overlying cerebral cortex is uninvolved in all sections in this case with the exception of the CA1 region of the hippocampus which shows neuron loss and astrocytosis, likely reflecting her seizure disorder.
