3C1,2 The most active area of the neurosurgical biopsy is shown stained with H&E. The inflammatory nature is seen in a low magnification image but the dominant feature is the presence of large numbers of macrophages. Frozen section diagnosis may be improved by a smear preparation which often shows large numbers of macrophages which should signal caution (H&E)
