Coronal sections of this fixed cerebral hemisphere shows discoloration and atrophy of the digitate (arrow) and subcortical white matter in the absence of gross changes in the gray matter. The central area appearing white (arrowhead) reflects the cellularity of the process and not myelination. The thalamus, hypothalamus, mammillary bodies, and splenium of the corpus callosum are expanded and distorted.
