1G12 (Case 1) Area A Spinal cord Biels 40X copy
1G11,12 An adjacent section was stained for myelin (1G11, LFB-PAS) and axons (1G12, Bielschowsky). The loss of myelin and axons appeared equally lost, not the typical preferential loss of myelin with axonal preservation expected in a demyelinative process. Nonetheless, a patient at the last stage of a demyelinative process may well show significant axon loss as well. Axons are represented by small irregular dots (arrow, G12); the round elements (arrowheads, 1G12) are residual oligodendrocytes (Bielschowsky)
