Washington University Experience | MYELIN (NON-IMMUNE MEDIATED) | Metachromatic Leukodystrophy | 3B MLD, sural nerve (Case 3) EM 1 copy - Copy
3B A low magnification electron micrograph demonstrating the gamut of ultrastructural changes in this sural nerve with MLD. Naked demyelinated axons are accompanied by Schwann cell cytoplasmic inclusions, macrophages containing osmiophilic debris, and small unmyelinated axons. Notice that the demyelinated axon (arrow) whose Schwann cell cytoplasm contains myelin/sulfatide debris is in intimate contact with a macrophage with debris (electron micrograph)
