Sections of the resected spinal cord tumor show a malignant small blue round cell tumor with multiple histological appearances. Much of the tumor is made up of hypercellular sheets of moderately pleomorphic cells with cytoplasmic vacuolation/clearing, variable nuclear hyperchromasia and clumped unevenly distributed chromatin. Nucleoli are relatively inconspicuous and rhabdoid cells are absent. The background is fibrotic and the dura mater, nerve roots and ganglion cells are invaded by tumor.
