Washington University Experience | NEOPLASMS (EMBRYONAL) | ATRT - Atypical Teratoid Rhabdoid Tumor | 8A3A ATRT (Case 8) H&E 20X 1
This is a high grade neoplasm with multifocal necrosis and various morphologies. In some areas, the tumor is composed of sheets of polygonal cells with eccentric nuclei and abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm, imparting a rhabdoid appearance. However, in other areas, the neoplastic cells have oval or elongated hyperchromatic nuclei and indistinct or spindled cytoplasmic processes reminiscent of astrocytes. Other spindled areas appear more mesenchymal and are arranged in intersecting bundled elements with a myxomatous background and mimic chordoma (8A1, arrow). Mitotic figures are readily found.
