Sections show a hypercellular tumor composed of sheets of cells with indistinct cytoplasmic borders and small round nuclei with coarsely stippled chromatin and inconspicuous nuclei. Necrosis and scattered karyorrhectic debris is seen and mitotic activity is frequent. The density of the cells is variable with pale nodular foci of larger cells.
