The tumor cells are small to intermediate sized, round to oval with variable amount of eosinophilic cytoplasm and hyperchromatic nuclei with mild to moderate pleomorphism. In between the nodules, the cells are hyperchromatic and primitive appearing ("neuroblastic") with prominent mitotic activity. Within the nodules, there is increased neuropil and most of the nuclei are rounder with more delicate chromatin and fewer mitoses, consistent with maturation towards neurocytes.
