Sections of the optic nerve specimen show a pilocytic astrocytoma composed of bland neoplastic astrocytes with round to spindled nuclei and prominent piloid processes. The neoplastic astrocytic cells are bland, commonly appear hair like (piloid), and typically lack significant mitotic activity (proliferative index in this case = Ki67 <1%) (H&E)
