There is a large tumor mass extending from the posterior aspect of the medulla into the 4th ventricle. Approximately at the level of the pontomedullary junction a firm yellow mass is noted in the posterior aspect of the medulla markedly compressing and distorting the 4th ventricle. This roughly spherical mass becomes progressively larger as the brainstem is followed inferiorly. The mass shows variegated gross appearance of yellow necrosis and red areas of hemorrhage.
