Washington University Experience | NEOPLASMS (GLIAL) | Ependymoma - Microscopic | 8A6 Ependymoma with giant cells (Case 8) H&E 8
8A6-8 Arranged in sheets that are decorated by perivascular pseudorosettes and that occasionally exhibit papillary features, most of the neoplastic cells are small and epithelioid/polygonal, with mildly atypical oval nuclei and moderate amounts of eosinophilic (or, occasionally, almost clear) cytoplasm. However, some areas exhibit considerable pleomorphism, and a regionally variable but significant number of tumor cells (ranging from rare to focally frequent) are "giants," with large, bizarre hyperchromatic nuclei and generous eosinophilic cytoplasm. Mitotic figures are rare. Robust microvascular proliferation is not appreciated.
