8A8 Ependymoma with giant cells (Case 8) H&E 40X 4
Arranged in sheets that are decorated by perivascular pseudorosettes and that occasionally exhibit papillary features, most of the neoplastic cells are small and epithelioid/polygonal, with mildly atypical oval nuclei and moderate amounts of eosinophilic (or, occasionally, almost clear) cytoplasm. However, some areas exhibit considerable pleomorphism, and a regionally variable but significant number of tumor cells (ranging from rare to focally frequent) are "giants," with large, bizarre hyperchromatic nuclei and generous eosinophilic cytoplasm.
