17A1 Glioblastoma, cartilage (Case 17) H&E WM
Case 17 History ---- The patient was a 64 year old man who underwent resection of a glioblastoma in November of 2001. He presented with a dural-based right frontal mass. The differential diagnosis included recurrent glioma vs. meningioma. ---- Sections from both the 2001 and 2003 specimens reveal a highly cellular infiltrative glial neoplasm with prominent gemistocytic features. The mitotic index is elevated and there is endothelial hyperplasia. Foci of necrosis, with and without pseudopalisading are also seen. In the 2001 specimen, there are multiple lobules of well-formed hyaline cartilage, consistent with a metaplastic process. ---- 17A1-5 Successively increasing magnifications of the cartilaginous elements surrounded by classic glioblastoma (H&E)
