5B1-5 Sections from the left temporal tumor show multiple fragments of neoplastic tissue with treatment-related necrosis. Morphologically, the viable tumor tissue is almost completely adenoid, composed of irregular cords and strands of cells with high grade nuclear morphology and modest cytoplasm, suspended in a pale blue myxoid matrix. Within the tumor tissue, apoptotic bodies were numerous and foci of 'spontaneous' necrosis with karyorrhexis were present. Most of the viable tumor tissue surrounded blood vessels, with intervening bands of bland necrosis. The adjacent brain showed regionally variable gliosis, microvacuolation, bland necrosis, and radiation-associated vascular changes, without evidence of dense infiltration by diffuse glioma.
