Washington University Experience | NEOPLASMS (GLIAL) | Glioblastoma, epithelioid | 1B3 GBM, Epithelioid (Case 1) H&E 8
1B3-5 In some areas, the tumor cells have a strikingly epithelioid appearance, where the cells appear carcinoma-like with surrounding reactive fibrosis and dense aggregates of lymphocytes. Progressively increasing magnification of the tumor cells show large discohesive cells, with copious amounts of cytoplasm, single or multiple nuclei and prominent nucleoli. In other areas, the tumor cells have a more rhabdoid/gemistocytic appearance. In still other areas, the tumor cells have the appearance of a more conventional high-grade astrocytoma. Mitotic figures, including atypical forms, are frequent. Microvascular proliferation and necrosis are also present. (H&E)
