Case 5 History ---- The patient was a 55 year old man with a large left frontal mass with cystic components and marginal enhancement. Operative procedure: Craniotomy and resection. ---- 5A1 An intraoperative smear preparation showed a high-grade astrocytic neoplasm composed of pleomorphic cells with eosinophilic cytoplasm and many with eccentrically placed nuclei. Some of the cells have vacuolated cytoplasm. In some areas the cells possess prominent macronucleoli. Nuclear pseudo-inclusions are also present in some of the tumor cells. Scattered, bizarre multinucleated giant cells are seen within the tumor. Mitotic activity is high with multipolar mitotic figures present. (H&E)
