Washington University Experience | NEOPLASMS (GLIAL) | Glioblastoma, giant cell | 5A2 GBM, giant cell (Case 5) H&E 1
5A1-5 This is a high grade diffusely infiltrating neoplasm with a biphasic tissue pattern of glial and focal mesenchymal differentiation. The glial component is highly cellular and composed of small glial neoplastic elements, with pseudo-palisading necrosis. Microvascular proliferation is present but not prominent. There is a second glial component composed of pleomorphic astrocytic tumor cells with marked nuclear atypia and increased mitotic activity with numerous scattered multinucleated giant cells. The mesenchymal component is composed of relatively well demarcated areas of densely packed bundles of malignant spindle shaped cells; however, it is a small component of the entire tumor provided (H&E).
