21B GBM, small cell variant (Case 21) GFAP 2.jpg
Immunohistochemical studies demonstrate extensive immunoreactivity for glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP). ---- Ancillary Studies: Only rare p53 immunoreactive nuclei were found. ---- FISH polysomies (gains) of both 1p and 19q were seen. There was no evidence of deletions. FISH also highlighted high level EGFR gene amplification in many of the tumor cells. This latter finding is particularly common in the small cell variant of GBM, where it is reportedly seen in roughly 70% of cases. ---- The morphologic and immunohistochemical features are consistent with a diagnosis of glioblastoma WHO grade IV. Specifically, the cell morphology is suggestive of the "small cell" variant of glioblastoma.
