9D GBM, small cell subtype (Case 9) p53 2.jpg
There is strong and nearly diffuse nuclear positivity for p53 protein. The morphologic and immunohistochemical features are consistent with the diagnosis of glioblastoma with focal small cell features, WHO grade IV. However, given the morphologic overlap between this entity and high grade oligodendroglial tumors, genetic studies were pursued. ---- FISH Studies. In this particular case, there was evidence of polysomies (gains) of chromosomes 1, 19, 7 and 10. Additionally, there was evidence of focal EGFR gene amplification. No deletions were identified, specifically for 1p/19q. Although not entirely specific, this genetic pattern further supports the diagnosis of glioblastoma with small cell features
