Case 30 History ---- This was the 2nd BJH admission for this 56 year old right handed male who in October of 1978 was diagnosed with a malignant contrast enhancing 3rd ventricular tumor. The symptoms at that time were progressive deterioration of memory and intellect. The patient was started on corticosteroids and a VP shunt placed to much improvement. He was treated with radiation therapy, receiving 5,200 rads. Two years later he had a generalized convulsion while at work. A CT scan showed marked increase in the size of the tumor. The tumor was deemed inoperable and standard dose BCNU therapy was recommended but refused. He was discharged on Dilantin and Decadron. Since January the patient slowly deteriorated with decreased frequency of speech, no movement of lower extremities and decreased movement in the upper extremities, He stopped eating 4 days before admission. He progressively deteriorated over the next few days and expired in 5/1980.
