8B1 Gliomatosis cerebri (Case 8) H&E 1I
8B1,2-The specimen consisted of multiple fragments of hypercellular cortex and underlying white matter. Numerous atypical cells were characterized by elliptical nuclear enlargement, mild atypia, and limited discernible cytoplasm. Mitotic figures were evident, however, there was no evidence of either microvascular proliferation or necrosis. Strong GFAP and scattered p53 were identified. A Ki-67 stain revealed an increased labeling index, estimated at 25%. ---- The morphologic and immunohistochemical features are consistent with an anaplastic astrocytoma, WHO grade III and, considering its radiographic extent, were thought to represent gliomatosis cerebri.
