2A0 Case 2 History
Case 2 History ---- This was a 48 year old female with a history of a left temporal lobe glioma diagnosed 15 years previously when she presented with partial complex seizures and headaches. She underwent a partial resection of her left temporal lobe tumor and was given 4000 rads of radiation therapy as well as chemotherapy. She did well without any seizures or headaches until she began to have a recurrence of her seizures 5 years later. An MRI revealed an apparent recurrence of her left temporal lobe mass with mass affect. She underwent a resection of this mass and was given an additional 4000 rads of radiation therapy over three weeks with BCNU chemotherapy. Pathologic diagnosis of this tumor was thought to be astrocytoma with atypical and anaplastic features. Terminally she and her husband noted a decline in her intellectual function and behavior over the last several months. Her current behavior included increased sleeping time (> 12 hours per day), confusion, disorientation, and garbled speech. She was referred for hospice care secondary to her recent rapid mental decline and died at home on 15 years after diagnosis.
