The tumor cells have mostly round to oval nuclei with occasional micronucleoli and prominent perinuclear clearing. However, a focal area shows dense cellularity, with increased nuclear atypia, incipient microvascular proliferation, and increased mitotic activity (~8-10/10 HPF). The background neuropil shows microvacuolation, focal radiation necrosis, and regional hyalinized thickening of the vessel walls.
