Synaptophysin is diffusely but only slightly positive, mostly in a perinuclear dot-like pattern. ---- Not shown: Fluorescence in situ hybridization shows 1p/19q codeletion, consistent with oligodendroglial differentiation. ---- Overall, the features are most consistent with an anaplastic oligodendroglioma, WHO grade 3. Immunohistochemical stains for neuronal lineage elements, in this case synaptophysin, is seen in subpopulations of oligodendroglial neoplasms.
