Synaptophysin highlights a subset of large and small tumor cells. ---- Ancillary data (not shown): A stain for CD34 reveals patchy, but strong immunoreactivity. The immunoprofile raises the possibility of ganglioglioma. However, dysmorphic ganglion cells were not seen on routine morphology and some degree of neuronal staining has been reported in pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma. Given the superficial location of the tumor and the extensive resection, the prognosis is considered excellent. The diagnosis made was pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma, WHO Grade 2
