Washington University Experience | NEOPLASMS (GLIAL) | Pleomorphic Xanthoastrocytoma (PXA) | 3A7 PXA (Case 3) H&E 10
3A7,8 This is a high-grade neoplasm that abuts the cortical surface, harbors regionally confluent patchy central necrosis (with some perivascular sparing), and exhibits a relatively broad interface with the adjacent brain parenchyma which is often coarsely edematous and gliotic, with only rare single-cell infiltration. Mitotic figures are numerous (>>5/10HFP), and atypical examples are common. Microvascular proliferation and vessels with endothelial hyperplasia are widespread. Many vessels show intravascular thrombosis.
