Case 18 History --- The patient was a 78 year old man with a past medical history significant for cerebral palsy, mental retardation, dementia with delusions, epilepsy, recurrent urinary tract infections with urosepsis, left above-the knee amputation, and constipation. He also had a history of pulmonary tuberculosis for which he underwent undetermined therapy in the 1960's. He had been living in nursing care facilities for the majority of his life unable to interact either by sign language or speech. ---- He had been in his usual state of health when he was suddenly found unresponsive, pulseless and without spontaneous respirations. CPR was performed but was ultimately unsuccessful. ---- 18A1-4 At autopsy the unfixed brain weighed 1080g. Coronal sections of the cerebral hemispheres reveal several white, 1-2 cm cortical tubers, firm to touch, in the left frontal, parietal and temporal lobes and right occipital lobe; predominantly involving the grey matter and the grey-white matter junctions. Several whitish, firm nodules are noted on the ependymal surface of the lateral ventricles and involve the subventricular parenchyma. The size of the nodules varies from 3-6 mm in greatest dimension.
