Washington University Experience | NEOPLASMS (GLIAL) | Subependymal Giant Cell Astrocytoma (SEGA) | 8B2 SEGA (Case 8) H&E 40X
The subependymal nodule is composed of spindle-shaped astrocytes with elongated hyperchromatic nuclei and stellate cytoplasmic processes, arranged in intersecting fascicles in the cellular areas or more haphazardly in the loose areas. Although this tumor is characteristically associated with tuberous sclerosis, no areas of candle guttering, cortical tubers, heterotopia involving the white matter, renal angiomyolipoma or cardiac rhabdomyoma were identified in this patient. SEGA has also been reported as an isolated finding in the literature but form frustes may occur.
