Cross-sections of the brainstem show multiple nodules, many deeper than the subarachnoid space. (H&E) ---- Comment: A diagnosis of leptomeningeal carcinomatosis, lung origin, with innumerable metastases involving the cerebral hemispheres, brainstem, and cerebellum was made. Extensive, multifocal infiltration by metastatic carcinoma of cerebral cortex as well as all other regions of the central nervous system resulted in the combination of rapid intellectual deterioration with focal neurologic signs in this patient. The small size of the individual deposits was evidently below the level of resolution of the CT scan. The general autopsy disclosed widespread visceral dissemination of the metastatic lung adenocarcinoma. (H&E)
