9B1,2 Routine stains show a low grade glioneuronal neoplasm with vague nodularity and areas of microcystic change. Necrosis and microvascular proliferation are not identified. There is a background of extracellular myxoid material and there is a specific neuronal element of 'floating' neurons found in pools of mucin. The glial element of the tumor has an oligodendroglial appearance and sometimes these tumor cells are arranged in linear streams. The neuronal tumor cell component shows variable amounts of eosinophilic cytoplasm with Nissl substance and the nuclei are round with finely stippled chromatin and prominent nucleoli. The oligodendroglial-like tumor cells have round and regular nuclei, with variable finely stippled to hyperchromatic nuclei, and inconspicuous nucleoli. Mitotic figures are not readily identified.
