Washington University Experience | NEOPLASMS (NEURONAL) | Ganglioglioma | 6B1 Ganglioglioma (Case 6) H&E 3 (2) copy
6B1,2 H&E stains multiple small fragments of a low grade neoplasm. Many of the tumor cells (arrows, 6B1) appear "ganglion-like," with ample eosinophilic cytoplasm, eccentric large round-to-oval nuclei, prominent nucleoli, and, occasionally, abnormal smudged Nissl substance. Other neoplastic cells appear astrocytic (6B2), with small, atypical, hyperchromatic nuclei, scant eosinophilic cytoplasm, and long processes. Occasional eosinophilic granular bodies are noted. Microvascular proliferation and endothelial hyperplasia are not appreciated, but many blood vessels exhibit robust perivascular lymphocytic infiltrates and associated mural changes. No mitotic figures are detected.
