2B1-4 This folium shows the delicate central white matter tract (arrow, 2B1) of the arbor vitae surrounded on both sides by a thickened granule cell layer (between arrowheads, 2B1) which have lost the majority of normal granule cells with replacement by enlarged, cytoplasm rich ganglion-like cells. The gangliocytic proliferation is composed of cells with rather abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm, round to ovoid nuclei with crisp nuclear membranes, prominent nucleoli, and coarsely granular or speckled chromatin; some authors have described these as "hypertrophic granule cells," and this attribute is appreciated in areas of transition
