Washington University Experience | NEOPLASMS (NEURONAL) | Multinodular Vacuolating Neuronal Tumor | 3B3 MVNT (Case 3) B6 H&E 40X 1
3B3,4 H&E-stained sections show focal involvement by a low-grade neoplasm consisting predominantly of atypical neurons embedded in a coarse, fibrillar neuropil-like matrix with reactive-appearing changes (e.g., microglial activation) and conspicuous microvacuolar changes both in the background neuropil and in the cytoplasm of the atypical neurons. The individual tumor cells are mildly atypical and haphazardly distributed with occasional alignment along capillary vessels; intermingled oligodendrocyte-like cells are also present as well as reactive microglia. Mitoses are not identified. Necrosis and microvascular proliferation are not present. The atypical areas occur in occasional nests throughout the sample, but a multinodular appearance is not evident.
