Washington University Experience | NEOPLASMS - CRANIAL AND PARASPINAL NERVEs | Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumor (MPNST) | 16A1 MPNST with Meissner's (MPNST (Case 16) H&E 1
Case 16 History ---- The patient is a 48-year-old woman with neurofibromatosis with large right superior gluteal mass, likely a nerve sheath tumor. Evaluate for malignant degeneration. Operative procedure: Ultrasound-guided needle biopsy of right superior gluteal mass. ---- 16A1-3 Sections from the right gluteal mass show a spindle cell neoplasm comprised of spindle cell nuclei with few atypical large bizarre nuclei and eosinophilic cytoplasm. Rare mitoses are seen, however no atypical forms are noted. There is no evidence of necrosis. ---- Focally, there are numerous Meissner's corpuscles (arrow, 16A3) within the tumor. Normally these structures lie between the dermal papillae just beneath the epidermis of the fingers, palms, and soles. Commonly they involve neurofibromas of the skin. They are formed of elongated Schwann cells, a connective tissue capsule and a central axon and represent cutaneous receptors for fine touch.
