Washington University Experience | NEOPLASMS - CRANIAL AND PARASPINAL NERVEs | Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumor (MPNST) | 3A1 MPNST (Case 3) H&E 4
Case 3 History ---- The patient is a 28 year old woman with a large paraspinal mass and history of neurofibromatosis type 1. Operative procedure: Excision of paraspinal mass with lumbar spine fusion. ---- 3A1-3 This is a neoplasm composed of spindled cells with wavy nuclei present within a variably myxoid and collagenized stroma. In many areas the tumor cells have hyperchromatic elongated nuclei and scant cytoplasm; however, in other areas the tumor is densely cellular and composed of both spindled and epithelioid cells. Mitoses are easily identified. Several areas with geographic necrosis, as well as individual cell necrosis as evidenced by rampant apoptotic debris are also noted. The tumor is present at the margins of the submitted specimen and invades into the adjoining skeletal muscle.
