6A1 MPNST (Case 6, thanks Szymanski & Hurth) H&E 2 (2)
6A1-4 Sections are remarkable for the presence of a high grade malignant spindle cell neoplasm consistent with the patient's previous diagnosis of malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST). The sections of the cauda equina demonstrate malignant cells infiltrating in and around peripheral nerves and surrounding blood vessels. The cauda equina shows a mixture of viable and nonviable necrotic appearing malignant cells along with thrombosis of medium to large sized vessels and vascular hyalinization, consistent with treatment effect.
