Case 17 History ---- The decedent was a 63-year-old male with history of non-ischemic dilated cardiomyopathy, heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (40-45%), left bundle branch block, papillary thyroid microcarcinoma, remote mini-Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, and deep venous thrombosis on Xarelto who first developed imbalance and gait difficulties in 2018. Clinical workup was concerning for upper motor neuron disease, with subsequent development of severe denervation in the right upper and lower extremities, dysarthria, pseudobulbar affect, cognitive issues, and respiratory failure. ALS was diagnosed in 10/2021 and the patient was transitioned to palliative care. This is a non-neoplastic dorsal root ganglion from a “control” autopsy.
