1A0 Case 1 History
Case 1 History ---- The patient was a 10-year-old boy with left peroneal neuropathy. Although the studies and reports are not currently available for review, MRI prior to 07/2006 reportedly identified dilatation of the left peroneal nerve, suggesting the presence of a tumor. Intraoperative examination of the left peroneal nerve revealed compression of the peroneal nerve by tendinous bands at its site of entry into the peroneus musculature. Proximal to the site of compression, the nerve was dilated and firm; distally, the nerve was very soft and translucent. The nerve was decompressed to allow it the opportunity to regenerate. Post-operatively, the patient's left peroneal nerve palsy persisted. Operative procedure: Left peroneal nerve biopsy and tendon transfer. Intraoperatively, the surgeon noted reduced dilatation of the left peroneal nerve and absent contraction of the appropriate musculature in response to stimulation. A fascicle of the very "firm, fibrotic and woody" tibialis anterior side of the nerve was taken and sent for histological examination.
